OC-ALA began as a chapter of ALA (Association of Legal Administrators) in 1979 with twelve members.  In 1978, Charter Member Margaret Lovig's Managing Partner, Greg Harris, was asked by the Orange County Bar Association to chair the Law Office Management Section.  Margaret and her Managing Partner were charged with the task of establishing a forum where law firm management-related issues could be addressed.

Eventually, Margaret and other administrators found themselves attending these meetings without the Managing Partners.  Margaret remembers a meeting in which John Gupta (ALA Regional Vice President and Founding President of the Beverly Hills chapter now incorporated into GLA-ALA) spoke on the topic "What ALA can do for you."  She innocently asked, "How many people do you need to start a chapter?"  The answer was 10 and the idea for an Orange County Chapter was born. That first group, now known as Charter Members, continued to meet and organize at Marilyn Hodge's office.  OC-ALA received its Charter in November, 1979.

The Charter Members took their role in ALA very seriously along with their positions at their respective law firms.  The Officers of the OC-ALA board that first year were President, Ingrid Stracky; Vice-President, Richard Boden; Secretary, Marilyn Hodges; and Treasurer, Margaret Lovig.   Margaret remembers that the first year concentrated on a Membership Drive, which meant the Board perused Martindale-Hubbell and wrote a lot of letters to prospective members.  The second year, Rich Boden was President, Margaret Lovig was Vice-President and the focus was becoming visible in Orange County.   The Chapter was quite active with the Orange County Bar Association that year.  It was the beginning of the strong foundation on which the Orange County Chapter rests and has prospered.  Since receiving its Charter in 1979 the chapter has grown to 150+ members.

OC-ALA counts among its members many of ALA's "Distinguished Members" who have been ALA members for 25+ years.  These members offer a broad range of experience and knowledge to other members of the chapter and serve as vital and valuable assets to the chapter.  ALA Distinguished Members:
